You may never have heard of
him, but André Verchuren is one of the kings of the accordéon
in France, and sometimes he sings too !, as exemplified with "T'es balancée
commme une reine" ("You're shaped like a queen"), one of his
sixties single sides. André even has his own official website, full of
stuff, including scans of the covers of the myriad of records he's released.
A few months ago, we played some songs by Les Kavéka, a band who have
recorded some tamuré sides for Vogue in the early sixties. One of these
songs was "Les femmes d'Amérique". It's the same song we feature
this month, but with a versionn recorded in the USA in 1937, with lyrics in
French to avoid censorship ! And to round up the real oldies, there's a "hawaiian"
version of "St Louis Blues" from 1934. These last two songs are available
on the Fremeaux label.
The new compilation of the Sorry But Home Recordings label is expected any time
now, and it will feature a previoulsy unreleased Superflu song, but in the meantime
we went fishing for an old Frères Nubuck song on the label's very first
compilation. The cover of "Anarchy in the UK" by a Cantonese punk
band, which was released in France in the eighties, was graciously supplied
to us by our friend Le Colonel from L'Opération Kangourou. The Calexico
track is a very good live version of one of the songs from their first album,
available only on a 2002 tour CD. As for Kelley Stoltz, an American whose "Antique
glow" album has just been released in Europe, he's crazy enough to have
covered at home, alone and in its entirety, the first Echo & The Bunnymen
album, that says it all !

On the Radio Vivonzeureux
! playlist this month a seasonal song to start the proceedings (Michel's "I
felt better when I was on holiday"), followed by a rare nugget by Dogbowl,
singing the praises of the 2CV in French with Frenchman Peter Parker. Two hip-pop
classics follow suite, two paeans to the love of music and records. The Stereo
MCs had paved the way in 1989 with "On 33", the opener of their first
album. In a vey similar style, the short-lived Subsonic 2 did as well, if not
better, in 1991 with their "Addicted to music" single, which can also
be found on what must be their sole album, along with another single which praised
the "Unsung heroes of hip hop".
Two of the artists we follow closely, Jonathan Richman and Pascal Comelade have
released an album in 2004, but Comelade's seems to have been only released in
Spain, so use your internet to hunt for it ! The Howlin' Wolf song is an excellent
oldie ; Superflu's is one of their best songs, only released on an out-of-print
EP, so the band had the good idea to make it available as a free MP3 on their
website ; The Low track is from their just-released 3 CD + 1 DVD box set at
the price of na single CD : an unbeatable value for money ratio !

"Why do I need a job
?" Thanks to Bobby Bare Jr., you'll find in this month's playlist the song
that inspired last month's playlist title, from an album released 4 years ago
(but he's just released a new one...). There's some other new stuff with Tall
Dwarfs, Little Wings and Ben Weaver, but also some stuff that's not commercially
available, like this track from the Giant Sand tribute album, "Dusted"
by The Jellybabies, this probably unreleased track by San Francisco musician
Jason Kleinberg, and the very nice gift from the Hinah label, a Kris Kristofferson
cover by Marianne Dissard and Joey Burns (and John Convertino also features
on this recording).
We'll just pretend the Fats Domino track is this month's oldie, but it's especially
a tribute to one of our contemporaries, who's just celebrated his 75th birthday
in New Orleans, including at least 55 years of artistic career. Bo Diddley has
also recently turned 75, and is touring almost anonymously in the USA to celebrate.
It's so annoying to see all these French weeklies put out special issue upon
special issue dedicated to rock'n'roll's 50th birthday, and these two guys are
not even on the front page or featured in exclusive interviews !!
Les Frères Nubuck are not much featured in the press either. So, here's
a track from their famous "Chez les nudistes" album, perfect for the
summer season.
Two tracks from Laura Veirs' latest album are featured in the show, for "Carbon
glacier" is one of the most endearing albums relased this year, even if
it's got some weaknesses. And we round it up on a very ethereal note with the
aptly-monikered The Innocence Mission...

A world tour and some travel in time with less than ten songs, that's what we offer you this month. We start this year with an ex-Monty Python who complains funnily (not surprisingly) that he's been fined heavily for a swear word. We end up, still this year, with the demo of a song from the forthcoming 3rd album by Superflu, and recent songs by our friends Look de Bouk and karine Bagot. In between, we'll have passed Louisiana in the 1930's, Ethiopia in the 1970's, Tahiti in the 1950's and the United States in the 1990's with a track from the first Tom Leach album (And when will the second ever be released ??).

The advantage of radio is
that it's got sound ! And to illustrate "Tu
m'as trompette mon amour", the discographical love story we've just
published, there's nothing better than some Georges Jouvin titles, including
two vocals ones, one by Georges and one by Dominique, so non one will be jealous
!
Our friends at Rev-Ola have just released a compilation by our friends The Jasmine
Minks, leading lights of the early Creation Records. We supply you with two
songs from this album, to help you discover or rediscover them.
Our other selections this month will take you to country land, and in the isles...

I have some regrets about
not drawing your attention last autum to the reissue of Lizzy
Mercier Descloux's first two albums, especially as I have been following
her career since I first heard one of her tracks on French national radio in
1981. It is especially sad as I missed the opportunity to give praise to a living
singer, and I'm now reduced to some sort of necrological tribute, as Lizzy has
just died at age 48. So, here are two tracks from her second album, "Mambo
Nassau", as well as "Maïta", a very African sounding single,
but which was recorded in Paris a year before her famous South African album.
Exotica prevails again with two very different sounding Tahitian tracks, the
very beautiful "Rarahu ia loti", and
the very funny (and very sexist) tamouré "Les femmes d'Amérique"
by Les Kaveka, who also gave us "Elle est
partie danser le tamouré".
Ever more exotic recordings, with After Dinner,
from Japan, with a recording from the 1980's, the country music of Jimmie
Davis and the soul music of Willie Mitchell,
better known as a Memphis producer.
Lastly, thanks to Mr. Citoyen
Lambda, we are happy to provide you with a rare version of "A picture
of Dorian Gray" by Television
Personalities.
Album of the month is "La maison de mon rêve" by CocoRosie,
a timeless DIY album recorded in Paris by two American sisters.

We pay tribute this month
to John McGeoch, one of the virtuoso guitarists appeared alongside punk (which
proves that these two notions weren't completely oppposite !), who died recently
at 48. He started with Magazine, writing the music for the B side of their first
single, which we program here, on which he plays not only guitar, but also saxophone
He then joined Siouxsie & The Banshees for their best work (including the
"Happy house" single), before playing several years with John Lydon's
PIL, the poor guy.
Punk and "consservative supporting Bush" are sadly not two opposite
notions anymore, as shown on a sad site pointed to us by Les Inrocks magazine,
www.conservativepunk.com,
headkining with a link to an interview with Johnny Ramone, a cretin and proud
to be one. How did the lyrics to that song go, "Beat on the brat with a
base ball bat", no ??
I leave you free to enjoy the rest of our playlist, including a song from Bingo
Bill Orchestra's excellent album, "Rangés des voitures", on
the promising Sorry But Home Recording Records label.

this month, first with Jonathan Richman's Little dinosaur, with a very rare
live version, recorded for an Amreican radio show sponsored by... Penthouse
Magazine ! We supply you too with the cover of this song by Dutch band John

as a Loch Ness monster by Jad et David Fair.
Some people just take their time... Like our friends from Look de Bouk, who
have just released their third album... a mere twelve years the second one !
Here is a song tkane from "Le monde entier... sans vous".
St. Thomas have just released their fourth album, only availble right now in
his native Norway, but we managed to dig one song from it.

From the japanese Pascals
testing their English to Peter Sellers' strange way of talking, from the French
Warum Joe straight out of a French film noir to Robert Wyatt studying foreign
accents, the main them for our monthly selection was easily found.
Last month, we had Howe Gelb and Kurt Wagner from Lambchop together live, this
month we have them separately, Howe getting to task in Germany in 2003 with
a momument, Leonard Cohen's Tower of song, while Lambchop delivers a very restrained
version of "Up with people" for one of Bernard Lenoir's White sessions.
But the best current record is not available as a record. It is "Yayahoni
plays his favourite songs in the morning", a collection of covers recorded
by Yayahoni, one of the Herman Düne brothers, available as free mp3s on
the Herman Düne site (www.hermandune.com).

After playing a 1967 Soft
Machine song from very early in his career last month, we progress along Robert
Wyatt's career, stopping in 1974 with "Sea song", from the very reputed
"Rock bottom", of which I now love a good half. Next month, we'll
come to new album "Cuckooland".
We've got a vrey special document in the show this month, with a live
version of "Paradise without mistakes" by Howe Gelb, recorded in may
2003 in Germany, which integrates masterfully "The muss of paradise",
recorded by Kurt Wagner in a car in front of Nashville airport. The "Muss"
version is available on The Band of Blacky Ranchette's latest album; the "Mistakes"
version is unfortunaletaly only available on the catalogue compilation of a
German booking agent, in a release limited to 1500 copies.
We dedicate a little sequence to Television Personalities to celebrate the cover
of their first single by Jeffrey Lewis on Rough Trade's 25th anniversary compilation,
and a Robots music sequence, not to celebrate Kraftwerk's latest disappointing
album, but rather the famous 70's Robots-Musicand the nice MP3s given away by
They Might Be Giants and their friends.
Lastly, let's thank André Herman Düne for offering us a good
Jonathan Richman cover (under the Yayahoni nickname) and let's salute
the definitive album by our firends Brodé Tango, "Ordre de dispersion",
of which we broadcast a first extract this month.

Our selection this month is
dedicated to one Karol Wojtila, the last of the priests, to celebrate his resistance
while we wait for the fate reserved for him by Le Vieux Thorax in one of his
older tracks, sung by himself, which has recently been made available as an
mp3 on his website.
One of our pleasures in the
past month has been the"Apocalypso" compilation released by Sorry
But Home Recording Records, that its mainman Le Vieux Mad sent me. This compilation
is made up of nearly 100% of optimistic hip-pop, so you can jump on it with
closed eyes. As for ourselves, we couldn't miss the opportunity to follow
"Le dernier des curés" with
"Chez les nudistes" !
Lots of bizarre stuff in our
program this month, starting with a single from producer Jack Clement in 1962,
dedicated to voice changing, which contains snippets ofJohnny Cash's voice.
There's "la fermeture éclair" too, sung by Delphine in Québec
in the 1960's, over the original instrumental version originale of "In
the past" by We The People, and also a song by Carla Bley thatis funny
and not jazzy !
We also supply exclusively "83 in 2003", the unreleased track from
the latest compilation produced by our virtual label, "I believe in rock'n'roll",
which celebrates the 20 years of Creation Records.

To learn about the death of
Johnny Cash just when you' re in a British charity shop, going through piles
of ageless records, in the hope, for instance, of finding a cheap 70's Johnny
Cash compilation on Hallmark, that's rather fitting, and it remains a "bad
news", even if not a surprising one, like Johnny himself sang in 1963,
under the obvious influence of toxic substances. Rather than the overestimated
American IV ("The man comes around"), it's toward number III, "Solitary
man", that I turned to, and especially this "I see a darkness"
that opens our selection, recorded with its creator Will Oldham on second voice.
The Leb Nichols/Schramm duet is a somptuous live cover of a Lucinda Williams
song, unreleased on record.
Good news this month is the release of the Soft machine BBC sessions, especially
the 5-song 1967 session which showcases in equal parts the talent of Kevin Ayers
and Robert Wyatt, qui rend justice à part égale au talent de Kevin
Ayers et de Robert Wyatt, who is also featured with a 2002 cover of a John Lennon
song, released by Uncut magazine in 2002, and who has just released a new album...
Another good news, the release of the first Band of Blacky Ranchette (Howe Gelb's
country band) album since 1990. Without Jonathan Richman, but with many guests.
If it can be judged by this one extract, it might be Howe's best official album
since "Chore of enchantment".
If you're looking for a song that sums up half of Jonathan Richman's career
(which I doubt), stop looking now. We found it, by chance : it's called "Crackin'
up" and it was recorded by Bo Diddley in 1958.

We're catching back on lost time this month with the Lewis Furey and the inestimable live track by The Honeymoon Killers, which all should have been featured on our programme these last few months if we hadn't been hindered by technical problems... Note that for The Honeymoon Killers song, the late singer is doing an encore, solo and acapella, in French in front of a German audience, and he wants them to keep quiet ! As for the new stuff, there's particularly the second album by Ray's Vast Basement, the San Francisco band who were featured on our "Surprise partie hoptimiste" compilation earlier this year. "By a river burning blue", which has just been released, completes the tale of the musical fiction created by the band around the basement that gives them their name, a tale which started in 2001 with the first album, "On the banks of the time". Le Vieux Thorax is also back with a split album with his pal Giscard le Survivant. Optiganally Yours is a band featuring a member of Pinback and, as their name indicates, they make use of the Optigan, this toy organ made by Mattel in the 70's which reproduced instrument sounds by using optical discs. Among the other rare documents proposed to you this month is a Jonathan Richman from the 80's from a tribute album to the Disney hero, and an Areski & Brigitte Fontaine song that could have been titled "Le 11 septembre"....

Many are my friends who ask me what I'm listening to at the moment, or what I recently fell for, or what are my latest discoveries. And very often, I don't know what to answer right away. Yet, I do listen to some music nearly every day, and there's a lot of stuff I like a lot ! So, as a kind of collective reply to my friends, here are the tracks I've loved enough to compile them and listen to them again and again on my car stereo.
